EC PASSES THE REAL Y2K COMPUTER BUG TEST

The Province of the Eastern Cape has crossed into the new millennium and continues to operate as normal without any reported Y2K related
problem. Nearly 15 hours after the muchdreaded Y2K bug was supposed to hit, the province remains with all mission critical systems such as
health, transport, communications, electricity, water and emergency services operating normally.

The Provincial Disaster Management Operation Centre in Bisho has received reports from local, regional and district disaster management
centers indicating that "all is well". However personnel at the centers continues to be on guard for any eventuality that may still arise.

Eastern Cape Premier Makhenkesi Stofile says: "it is good news for the development of our country and our province, and it confirms that a
lot of work had been done to prevent any potential problems."
"I should take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed in creating conditions conducive for the dawning of the new millennium
without hindrances. May all those tasked with the responsibility of monitoring developments and providing disaster management services when
needed, continue to be on guard throughout the Y2K transition period," Premier Stofile said.

MEC for Housing and Local Government, Gugile Nkwinti in person was overseeing the operations of the center by the turn of the millennium as
his Department is mandated to lead the management of any Y2K related disaster. Other MECs sharing the responsibility are Dr. Bevan Goqwana
of Health and Pumulo Masualle of Roads and Public Works. They would be alternating shifts over the period.
